Astana is not just a capital, but a symbol of moving forward, bold ideas and a future that is being created today. The city amazes with its scale, modern architecture and energy that is felt at every step.
Located in the heart of the Eurasian steppes, this city has grown from a small settlement into one of the youngest and most dynamically developing capitals in the world. Astana is a place where the traditions of the Great Steppe meet the ambitious architectural projects of the 21st century.
The city was founded in 1830 as the Cossack outpost of Akmolynsk. Throughout its history, it has repeatedly changed its name and status: it was a center for virgin lands development, an industrial city, and in 1997 it became the capital of independent Kazakhstan. Since then, Astana has undergone an incredible transformation — from a provincial city to a modern world-class metropolis.
Today Astana is a modern metropolis with a population of over 1.3 million people, which continues to grow and develop. The city is the political, economic and cultural center of Kazakhstan, and is increasingly becoming a notable player on the international stage.
Architecture
The architecture of Astana is a unique symbiosis of Eastern traditions and Western modernism. The city was designed by leading world architects, including Kisho Kurokawa, Norman Foster and Manfredi Nicoletti.
Among the main architectural landmarks are Baiterek, symbolizing the tree of life, Khan Shatyr, the largest tent in the world, and the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation — a pyramid designed by Norman Foster.
